Norman D. Sage MARCH 10, 1942 - MARCH 5, 2017 of Chicago, formerly of Libertyville, rests peacefully after a long battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret (Wing) Sage, and parents, Clarence and Mable Sage. He is survived by his brother, Robert (Judy) Sage; nephew Thor (Niki) Sage, sons Logan and Dylan; niece Heather (Tony Frabotta) Sage, sons Luka and Orion; his sister-in-law, Kathryne (Ken) Pyette, nephews, John and Daniel Pyette; brother-in-law Gary (Betty) Wing, niece Victoria Wing, nephew Geoffrey (Susan) Wing and children Megan and Chris. He cared deeply for his family and friends. He was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, librarian and professor at the College of Lake County in GraysLake, world traveler, passionate reader, avid baseball fan, enjoyed poker nights with friends, mentor to many, and loving friend to all who knew him. Norm requested no memorial service but only that we honor his memory with good acts.

Gary Michael Sannes, age 76 of St. Peter, Minnesota and formerly East Grand Forks, North Dakota died Friday, November 3, 2017 at Pheasants Ridge Assisted Living and Memory Care.Memorial service will be Thursday, November 9 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Peter Lutheran Church in St. Peter (427 W. Mulberry St.) with a one hour visitation prior to the service at church. Burial will take place at a later date at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. St. Peter Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements.Gary was born July 7, 1941 to Clarence and Violet (Nelson) Sannes in Grand Forks, North Dakota. He married Judy Boettcher on September 13, 1977 in Grand Forks. Gary owned the Sewing Machine Exchange until The Flood of 1997. He was a member of the American Legion in Alvarado, Minnesota. Gary loved fishing and spending time on the farm, restoring his Allis- Chalmers tractor.He is survived by his wife, Judy, of 40 years; sons, Andrew (Jenny) and Michael (Stacy) Sannes; grandson, Aedan; and brothers, Roger and Don. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Dr. Richard (Dick) Schiller  (born January 1, 1941) passed away March 3, 2016, in Norman, Oklahoma, at the age of 74. Dick is survived by his wife Elizabeth and by his sister Jane Fontes together with her husband Michael and their four children; also by his brother-in-law, Dr. William Pugh and wife, Dr. Patricia Troncoso. Dick was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Marjorie, and his sister Marilyn.
Dick was born in 1941 in Moorhead, Minnesota but the family soon moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota where he grew up. They later moved to Kansas City where he graduated from North Kansas City High. After completing his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Missouri and Kansas, he earned his Ph.D. in Science Education from the University of Kansas. Dick taught both English and Biology at Topeka High School and Topeka West High School where he would become an Assistant Principal. He was later named Director of the Adventure Center, an elementary-level enrichment school. In addition, he went on to become Director of Curriculum for the Topeka Public Schools. He married the love of his life, Elizabeth, in 1984. After moving to Norman in 1985, Dick served as Principal of Norman High School until 1991 when he became an Assistant Superintendent until retirement in 2008.
Throughout his career, Dick received many honors including being interviewed by the morning and evening national news channels for the creation of the Adventure Center in Topeka. He was recognized as a national Principal of Leadership from the National School Safety Center and Pepperdine University. During his principalship at Norman High School he spearheaded the school's successful bid for a national Blue Ribbon School Award. He was then appointed to evaluate other outstanding schools across the nation for that same award in Texas, Kentucky, Indiana, and California.
Dick was known for his great sense of humor and positive attitude. He was passionate about education, animals, and nature. Dick enjoyed traveling, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
Memorial services will begin at 1:30 p.m., Friday, March 11, 2016, at Mc Farlin Memorial United Methodist Church, 419 S. University, in Norman. Reverend Linda Harker will officiate.Memorial contributions may be made to Wild Care or the Norman Animal Shelter.
Arrangements for Dr. Richard (Dick) Schiller and his family have been placed in the care of Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman.

Annette Schley: Annette Carolyn Kano 1941 ~ 2008 Annette Carolyn Kano, passed away on Sunday, September, 7, 2008 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Annette was born May 15, 1941 in Grand Forks, North Dakota to Courtney and Caroline Schley. Annette received a bachelors degree in secondary education and a masters degree in education psychology at UCLA. Annette then moved to Utah and attended the University of Utah to obtain further education where she met Tosh Kano the love of her life. Annette and Tosh Kano were married on December 24, 1968 and were married for 39 years. Survived by husband Tosh; two sons, Cliff T. (Melisa) and Monte; and two grandchildren. Annette cared for all living creatures and her family was her number one focus in life. We love you Annette and will miss you. Annette was buried on Friday, September 12, 2008.

Sheldon T. (Shelly) Skavlem, 79, Thompson, North Dakota died April 18, 2020, at Altru Hospital, after a life-long battle of the effects of Agent Orange.

Sheldon Theodore Skavlem was born March 27, 1941 to Selmer and Ethel (Hagen) Skavlem in Grand Forks,
North Dakota. He graduated from Central High School in 1959. He married Carol F. Thompson on February 5th, 1963, and again on December 7th, 1968. They were blessed with their beloved son Wade.

Sheldon entered the United States Marine Corp in 1966 and served in the Heavy Artillery division in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1968. He retired from  Xcel Energy as a Natural Gas crew foreman, where he was employed for 30 years.

He was a member of the IBEW, the NRA, the National Trappers Assoc., the National Redbone Coonhound Assoc., the North American Fur Association., and the North Dakota Fur Hunters and Trappers Assoc. He was a registered trapper for the State of North  Dakota. He was honored by the American Veterans Disabled for Life, in Gratitude for his Service, in the name of Freedom and Democracy.

As a young boy he discovered guns, hunting and trapping and they became his passion in life. He enjoyed helping others develop the love of the sport. He always had Redbone  Coonhounds and loved the sound of the dogs howling once a racoon was treed. Anything to do with guns and dogs was good, especially helping countless friends sight in their guns. He was considered by his friends to be a rifle sharpshooter. He ran a large trapline for as long as his health allowed and was known as "Skinner" Skavlem. On their beloved property he planted several hundred trees and in his retirement years he loved working in their breathtaking yard, and making it look like a park, which was admired by all. He also had a small antique clock collection and loved finding shed antlers.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carol, Thompson, N.D.;  Granddaughter, Candace Skavlem, great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Rayna, Ray Jr, and Jaxon, all from Grand Forks, N.D.;  brother, Russell (Mary) Skavlem, Climax, Mn.;  sisters, Mary Bachmeier, (Dean Anderson), Grand Forks, ND , and Susan Pedersen, Helena, Montana;  Brother-in-law, Kevin Thompson, Thompson, N.D.;  Sister-in laws, Adele (Jim) Cook, Sparks, NV.          and Sherryl Kvamme, Grand Forks, N.D.; Aunt Jean Skavlem, Grand Forks, N.D.;  several cousins and 10 nieces and 10 nephews.

Preceding him in death was his son Wade;  sisters Shirley and Barbara;  brothers Dennis and James;  brothers-in-law James McElroy and Harlan Thompson;  nephews Jeff Thompson, and Ralph Lyndon Jr.; parents, Selmer and Ethel Skavlem;  father and mother in-law, Frank and Serine Thompson.

Services will be held in the yard where social distancing is available, June 27, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. at the rural Skavlem residence, 765 6th Ave NE, Thompson, ND and will be open to the public.

Jerry Severson
Gary Lee Skyberg, 68, of Peotone, died Tuesday (July 6, 2010) at his home. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Fedde-Helfrich-Cross Funeral Home in Peotone, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday. The Rev. Bill Riegle will officiate. Interment, with military honors, will be in the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood. Pallbearers will be Chad, Jason and Travis Skyberg, and Justin, Kory and Tyler Adams. Honorary pallbearers will be Kayla and McKenna Skyberg. Memorials may be made to the Illinois Veterans Home at Manteno or to VITAS Hospice. Mr. Skyberg was the owner of S & S Nationwide for more than 30 years and also owner of Sky's Lanes and Lounge in Manteno. He was born Nov. 4, 1941, in Grand Forks, N.D., the son of Oscar and Mabel Anderson Skyberg. He was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, Peotone. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving from 1959-1966, and a member of the Peotone American Legion Post 392, where he was past commander, a member of the VFW, and a member of the Marine Corps Association. He was a former member of the Peotone Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed playing Santa Claus at many community events and for his family over the years. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Wednesday golf league in Manteno. He was also an avid bowler. Surviving are his wife, the former Peg Butler, of Peotone, whom he married March 9, 1963, in Kansas City, Kan.; four children, Traci Adams, of Peotone, Chad (Kris) Skyberg, of Manteno, Jason (Chris Hoch) Skyberg, of New Lenox, Travis (Tracy) Skyberg, of Monee; and five grandchildren, Justin, Kory and Tyler Adams, Kayla and McKenna Skyberg. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Marcia Holeczy.

Gary Dean Sorenson, age 68, of Hibbing, MN died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010 after a long, courageous battle with cancer.  He died in his home surrounded by his family.  Gary was born in Grand Forks, ND on 8-18-1941 to Orville and Fay (Bakken) Sorenson.  Gary graduated from Grand Forks Central HS in 1959 and served in the Marine Corps from 1959-1963.  He married the love of his life Suzanne (McCreary) on January 14, 1961.  He graduated from UND and UMD, earning a BA, MS and specialist degree in Education. He worked as an educator for over 30 years receiving numerous awards and recognitions including Minnesota's "Distinguished Principal".
Gary loved life.  His greatest interests included his family, friends, fishing, hunting and sports. His love for dogs continued into his retirement including breeding, training and field trials. He was the greatest supporter and teacher of his grandchildrens' interests.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Dale Sorenson.Survivors include his wife Suzanne, of Hibbing; Son, Brett (Mary) Sorenson of Cloquet; MN; daughters, Kirsten (Dave) Clark of Onalaska, WI, Shosty (Greg) Heyblom of Nashwauk, MN, and Nissa (Chad) Tharaldson, of Bemidji, MN; twelve grandchildren:  Ryan, Tyler, and Gabe Sorenson, Nakia and Andrew Clark, Kelsey, Raini, Mackenzie, and Ethan Heyblom, and Grant, Kellen, and Brett Tharaldson; a brother, Jay (Grace) Rindahl of Fergus Falls, MN; a sister, Emm Fuller of Wadena, MN; his mother-in-law, Pearl McCreary of Hibbing, MN;  and many nieces and nephews.
The Sorenson family would especially like to thank the hospice staff for their loving care.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, from 5-8 PM at Peterson Funeral Chapel, 422 Roosevelt St., Coleraine, MN.    Visitation will continue on Thursday at Nashwauk Lutheran Church, 304 3rd St., Nashwauk, from 12 Noon until the 1 PM Funeral Service.  Arrangements are with Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing.

Carolyn Snyder-Stonebraker, C59, died Oct. 10, 2002, in Fargo, ND, of nonsmokers lung cancer.  She taught English and English as a Second Language at NDSU.  Carolyn is survived by two daughters; one granddaughter; sisters Sylvia Snyder Lehman, C56; Annette Snyder Wigert, C61; Anita Snyder Mayfirld, C61; Loretta and Mary; and a brother Corwin "Buzz" Snyder, C63.   The Red Cent, October 2003

Raymond John Stinar passed away October 18th, 2010.  Ray was born on September 3, 1941 to John and Helen (Dostal) Stinar at the Deaconess Hospital in Grand Forks, ND. Raymond attended Grand Forks Public Schools and graduated from Grand Forks Central High School in 1959. He played basketball, Legion and College Baseball. Ray graduated from Mayville State College in 1965 with a degree in Business Education, Physical Education and Health. He was united in marriage to Wilma Mullet on June 5, 1965 in Washington Lutheran Church of Northwood, ND. They were married for 45 years. He started his teaching and coaching career in McVille, ND. In 1969 he accepted a position in Mahnomen, MN. He finished his career at East Grand Forks Senior High, retiring in 2000. Ray also taught Drivers Training in East Grand Forks for many years. Ray coached High School Basketball for a total of 26 years. He was inducted into the Grand Forks Central's Hall of Fame in 1995 and into the Minnesota State Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2000.
Survivors of Ray include his wife, Wilma of East Grand Forks, MN, daughters, Nicole Knudson, Amy (Rick) Rivera, Sara (Mark) Ellingsworth all of Shakopee, MN, three grandsons, Bailey, Riley and Luke, sister, LaVerne McMenamy of Grand Forks, ND and many nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law, William Mullet, David Mullet, Norman Renden, Duane Loewen, sisters-in-law Hattie Blaufuss, Donna Tarver and Mary Luggerio.   Preceding Ray in death are his parents, brother, Irwin Stinar, sister, Jean Renden, brother-in-law, Bob McMenamy and niece Lynae Sondreal. Ray will be greatly missed by his family, his many friends and his pride and joy, "His Grandsons".
In Lieu of flowers, the family respectively asks that memorials are preferred.

The following was an article in the Grand Forks Herald about Ray:
Ray Stinar, a long-time head boys basketball coach at East Grand Forks Senior High, died unexpectedly Monday. Raymond Stinar, 69, of East Grand Forks, MN passed away on, October 18, 2010 at the Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND. .  He was 69.
Stinar coached 14 seasons at Senior High, resigning from the position after the 1991-92 season. His Senior High teams were 148-157. His most successful seasons at Senior High were in 1984-85 and 1985-86. On teams led by future UND All-American Dave Vonesh, the Green Wave were second in the 1985 Region 8A tournament and third in the region in 1986.
Stinar's coaching career began at McVille, N.D. He also coached at Mahnomen, where he took teams to the Minnesota state basketball tournament in 1973, 1975 and 1976. He had a career record of 357-231 in 26 seasons as a basketball coach.
Stinar was a 1959 Grand Forks Central graduate. He was a standout basketball player at Central, where he was an all-conference selection as a senior. He's a member of the Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, as well as the Central High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Stinar also excelled on the diamond. He was one of the top pitchers and starting first baseman for the Grand Forks American Legion baseball team that won the 1959 state championship. Stinar was a starting second baseman for the Grand Forks Matt's Tavern team that finished second in the 1967 Pan Am Games fastpitch softball competition. Fastpitch was an exhibition sport in the Pan Am Games at that time.
He played both baseball and basketball while attending Mayville (N.D.) State College.


Arthur Warren Stokes died on September 5, 2015 at the age of 73 in his home in Surprise, AZ, of cancer. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 18, 2015, 11:00 A.M. at the Bethel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, ND. Visitation will also be at the church from 9:30-11:00 A.M. preceding the service. Interment will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery, 1003 North 23rd Street, Grand Forks, ND following the service and luncheon. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Bethel Lutheran Church or a charity of the giver's choice. Vertin-Munson Wahpeton Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Warren was born on December 19th, 1941, in Grand Forks, ND. He was the son of Arthur W. Stokes and Hilda (Eid) Stokes. He graduated from Grand Forks Central and the University of North Dakota, earning his law degree in 1969. He married Karen L. Christianson in June of 1961. Together they had four children, Mark, Paul, Laura and Michelle. They divorced in 1991. In 1994, he married Patty Dahl Edland.

After graduation from Law School, Warren became a law partner with Alph Overby in Cooperstown, ND. In 1974, he moved to Wahpeton, ND, where he practiced with the law firm of Johnson, Johnson, and Milloy. In 1988 he established his own legal practice. He was elected to three terms as States Attorney for Richland County, resigning in 2012 due to his cancer diagnosis. During his career he served as President of the Trial Lawyers Association of North Dakota.

Warren loved a wide variety of activities in life. He was an avid hockey player in his youth and later coached hockey. He had a passion for flying and owned his own airplane. He golfed and loved his annual fishing trips with buddies to Canada. He hunted with his sons and brothers, and he relished special times with grandchildren. In his last years, he owned two motorcycles, in North Dakota and in Surprise, on which he enjoyed taking rides with family and friends. Even after a stroke in 2014, he continued to play ping pong three days a week and he was good at it! Warren was a man who loved to be with people and visit and will be missed by many friends and family.

He is survived by his wife Patty, his brother Steve (Susie) of Prior Lake, MN, and sister Margaret (Jim) Johnson of Rhinelander, WI; his children Mark (Janet) and Paul (Diana) of Bemidji, MN, Laura (Kris) Hoogland of Fargo, ND, and Michelle Fulp, of Gilbert, AZ; stepchildren Naomi Leslie, Virginia Beach, VA, Travis Edland, Lake Hendricks, SD, and Sonja Skadberg, Fargo, ND; thirteen grandchildren and step grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephew and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, David and Robert.
